Broad Spectrum CBD vs. Full Spectrum vs Isolate and Nano
Want to learn the differences between Broad Spectrum, Full Spectrum, Isolate and Nano CBD? We’ll break down all the jargon just as fast as an excited pup pulling fluff out of a new stuffed toy, but without any of the mess.
CBD can be broad spectrum, full spectrum or isolate (pure CBD) in nature. Similarly, nano-emulsified CBD simply breaks down any of the above into smaller, more absorbable particles.
What is Full Spectrum CBD?
Full Spectrum contains all of the cannabinoids and terpenes that are present in the hemp plant. While cannabinoids such as CBD, CBDA, CBG, CBC, CBN are present in addition to terpenes, it also includes THC, THCa and THCv.
For most concerned pet parents, products containing THC are a deal-breaker because ALL FULL -SPECTRUM CBD PRODUCTS CONTAIN THC. THC can be toxic to dogs and horses in certain quantities, which is why we don’t believe in giving full-spectrum CBD products to ANY animals, especially our fur-family.
Interesting Fact – Full spectrum products labeled 0% THC may contain small but significant amounts of THC. Most lab tests will deem it ND or “non-detectable” if under .03%. The .03% was designed specifically for humans. Not enough research has been done to determine a safe amount, if any, exists for pets. The only way to get CBD products that are truly THC-Free is to get one that is NOT full spectrum. To be sure that a product does not contain THC, purchase a broad spectrum, pure/isolate, nano-emulsified broad spectrum or nano-emulsified (pure/isolate) CBD.
What is Broad spectrum CBD?
Broad Spectrum CBD also contains everything found in a full spectrum cbd product, even an entourage effect, except that the THC is extracted (i.e. removed). Broad Spectrum CBD includes all of the same cannabinoids found in full spectrum products, except that the THC is removed. This includes CBD, CBDA, CBG, CBC, and CBN, in addition to terpenes. Just no THC.
What is Isolate CBD?
Basically, when everything is removed from the hemp plant except for the CBD and you get the isolate. CBD, of course, is the cannabinoid known best for its effects within the endocannabinoid system. This formulation simply “isolates” (see what we did there?) the CBD without any other cannabinoids or terpenes (aromatics). Terpenes are generally what gives hemp its earthy taste. Some dogs like the taste of grass, so we’re not judging. But most people and pets prefer CBD without a grassy taste to it. In short, pure CBD Isolate will give you the benefits of pure CBD without the earthy taste.
What is Nano-emulsified CBD?
Nano emulsified CBD can be derived from broad spectrum or even Isolate (pure) CBD. It has a greater absorption rate due to smaller hemp extract droplets, allowing for easier absorption into the body. As a result, less CBD is required to get the same result when compared to non-nano formulas. Because the body absorbs it faster, nano CBD tends to work quicker when compared to standard CBD formulations.
Nano-emulsified Broad Spectrum CBD
Broad spectrum CBD that is broken down into smaller particles, creating a highly absorbent nano emulsified broad spectrum formula.
Nano-emulsified Pure CBD
Pure CBD (also known as isolate) that is broken down into smaller particles, creating a highly absorbent nano emulsified pure CBD formula.
We make Hand and Paw’s tinctures and pet chews using our nano-emulsified formula. Nano not only works faster, is more effective, and tastes better when compared to other CBD products, but is also more economical. As a result, you’ll get the same results using a much smaller amount of our nano-emulsified CBD than you would from regular CBD from competitors (80-90% absorption rate compared to 35%).
Everything Hand and Paw creates is THC-free. H+P Natural Wellness Pet Parent formulas are all broad spectrum. Our H+P and Hand and Paw softgels are also nano-broad spectrum formulas. These contain the entire spectrum of natural cannabinoids and terpenes found in a full spectrum cbd product, but without the THC.
For the safety of our furry sidekicks, we spend extra to have the THC extracted. We’re pet parents too, and our four-legged companions mean the world to us. So we always put the interests of our furry friends ahead of profits.

"I still see products on other sites that state they are THC free full spectrum CBD oil. How this is possible if full spectrum, by definition, contains THC?"
As has been noted above, trace amounts of THC can be found in all full spectrum products. If you ever come across a company stating they have “THC free full spectrum CBD”, it’s likely mislabeled and is not a true “full-spectrum” product. In which case, we recommend running away from that product like someone left the back gate open. A University of Pennsylvania study shows 70% of CBD products sold online are mislabeled. So be sure to check the lab reports when purchasing CBD online.
If the company doesn’t make 3rd party lab reports available for consumers to view, or links to those reports don’t open, find one that does. Transparency is a must in the CBD market. You can check Hand and Paw and H+P Natural Wellness lab reports anytime for any product on the Trace My CBD page.
